Residents in the Manor Lakes area are about to get a taste of the power of child-led change. This week year 6 students at Our Lady of the Southern Cross (OLSC) Primary School have stepped out of their daily schedule to take part in Kids Thrive’s award-winning Kids’ Community Action Bootcamp.
Bootcamp is an immersive, innovative action-based program that empowers students to lead positive change projects in the local Wyndham community.
‘These students are incredible. At 11 and 12 years of age, they are engaging in real-world projects and showing real community leadership.’ Said Dr Andrea Lemon, CEO Kids Thrive.
The students have identified local issues that matter to them; built relationships with local community organisations who share their concerns; and, co-designed, planned and budgeted action-based philanthropic projects.
‘They have demonstrated creative leadership and resilience through this program – which are important life-long skills.’ Said Dr Lemon.
Friday 1 November is a critical day in the program – students will pitch for real funding for their projects to a panel of community members. Each panellist has expertise in finance, education, project management and other related areas. They will decide on which projects get the go-ahead in the student’s communities.
‘It’s an exciting, terrifying, challenging and fun day for the students who have worked hard all week to create practical and effective community projects.’ Said Dr Lemon.
Media are invited to attend the pitch day on Friday 1 November 2019. The teams will use costumes and props in their pitch presentations, making it a colourful, fun day.
Arrive from 10.30am. Friday 1 November 2019. Our Lady of the Southern Cross (OLSC) Primary School, Manor Lakes Boulevard, Manor Lakes.
