Wyndham residents got a taste of the power of child-led change this week, when Grade 6 students took on the Kids’ Community Action Bootcamp.
Year 6 students from Our Lady of the Southern Cross (OLSC) Primary School stepped up to take part in Kids Thrive’s award-winning Kids’ Community Action Bootcamp.
The immersive, action-based program empowered students to lead projects to help make Wyndham a better, stronger and safer community – and they didn’t disappoint.
‘These students were incredible! At 11 and 12 years of age, they are delivering real-world projects to benefit their community and showing real leadership,’ says Dr Andrea Lemon, CEO Kids Thrive.
‘They identified local issues they care about, built relationships with local community organisations who share their concerns, and co-designed, planned and budgeted action-based philanthropic projects.’
‘They are building their creative leadership skills and resilience – important life-long skills,’ says Dr Lemon.
More than $400 dollars was awarded to the students to implement seven community projects. The teams are working on a range of causes, including raising money for more paediatric probes for local hospitals and creating awareness campaigns for local businesses on the importance and practicalities of recycling.
